Treasure Coast Turnpike Mainline Widening Projects

Florida’s Turnpike Mainline Widening Projects in Martin and St. Lucie Counties

Introduction

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, part of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), is widening the Turnpike Mainline (SR 91) from Jupiter (Indiantown Road) to Okeechobee Road (SR 70) in Palm Beach, Martin, and St. Lucie Counties. The Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study concluded in February 2023 under FPID 423374-1 and the projects are progressing to the Design phase.

Design is the third phase of the FDOT project development process. Construction plans, specifications, and final estimates to build the project are developed during the design phase.

These projects will add travel lanes to the Turnpike Mainline and improve existing interchanges in order to meet future traffic demand. More information will become available as design progresses. There are several projects that are currently funded for design:

Design Funded in FY 2024 (July 2023-June 2024)

Turnpike (SR 91) Interchange Improvements at SW Martin Highway (SR 714) (446165-1)

Currently, none of these projects are funded for Right-of-Way acquisition or Construction. Every year in July, FDOT evaluates and approves the work program for the next 5 years. Projects are funded for future phases based on the needs of Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise roadway system. As funding becomes available for these projects, the schedule will be updated to reflect start dates for Right-of-Way acquisition and Construction.

Noise Studies are performed in both Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study phase and the Design phase, and re-evaluated if there is a major change in design to the roadway.

Project Background

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise completed a Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study that evaluated interchange alternatives for Midway Road and Florida’s Turnpike mainline. The PD&E study was completed in 2022 and included an assessment of the widening of Florida’s Turnpike Mainline from Indiantown Road/SR 706 to Okeechobee Road/SR 70 with any associated interchanges. A Public Hearing was conducted in July 2021.

Innovation

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is at the forefront of planning for a safer, more efficient, and technologically advanced transportation system for the future. The Enterprise continually seeks opportunities to integrate emerging transportation technologies that can help reduce congestion, create mobility choices, minimize environmental impacts and improve safety. The Enterprise also recognizes that connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technologies hold unprecedented opportunities for enhancing mobility and increasing safety on our roadways.
